Mr. Steyer is an experienced trial attorney, having tried numerous cases to verdict in a variety of state and federal courts. His practice is primarily in complex business litigation, including representative and class actions, in the areas of antitrust, consumer, investment fraud, labor and employment, real property and securities cases. He also represents entrepreneurs and investors in start-up companies. He represents both plaintiffs and defendants. Mr. Steyer's recent trials include:
- Prosecution of contract dispute involving the licensing of intellectual property that resulted in eight figure judgment for plaintiffs;
- Successful defense of a public REIT in an action to rescind a $200 million commercial lease brought by major institutional tenant;
- Prosecution of representative Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 17200 action on behalf of consumer cardholders against Visa and MasterCard that resulted in a $780,000,000 restitution judgment for plaintiffs;
- Represented European software/hardware developer in commercial dispute with chip manufacturer over a digital satellite telecommunications system;
- Successful defense of major industrial manufacturer in employment discrimination action in the Northern District of California;
- Represented individual investor in claims against blue chip Wall Street investment firm involving mismanagement of a multi-million dollar portfolio.
Mr. Steyer has also tried a number of high profile cases, including the ACC/Lincoln Savings Securities Litigation, the Technical Equities investment fraud cases, and the successful defense of the National Football League in a wrongful termination case. He is currently actively involved in antitrust litigation involving price fixing conspiracies in the high tech, credit card, shipping, and financial services industries; various securities cases, and commercial matters. He has provided cy pres awards to nonprofit organizations in fields such as children's advocacy and microfinance.
Mr. Steyer has written and lectured on a number of topics, including financial institution litigation, consumer remedies under Cal. Bus. & Prof. Code § 17200, securities fraud and directors and officers liability litigation, accounting irregularities at public companies, punitive damages, cross-examination, and trial techniques. He has also taught at the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (NITA) in Berkeley and San Francisco. He was selected for recognition by his peers as a Northern California "Super Lawyer" every year since 2004.
Mr. Steyer was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1981. He is a member of the Bar Association of San Mateo County, where he has served as a member of the bench and bar and alternative dispute resolution committees, an arbitrator, and as a Judge Pro Tem for the San Mateo County Superior Court. He is also a member of the American Bar Association, the Bar Association of San Francisco, the American Association for Justice, and the Association of Business Trial Lawyers. He served as a board director for the San Francisco Trial Lawyer's Association from 1996-2008 and is a former board member and president of the San Mateo County Trial Lawyers Association. He was the regional chair for the Central Pacific Region of the Anti-Defamation League from 2004-2006.
Mr. Steyer graduated magna cum laude from State University of New York at Buffalo in 1973, receiving his bachelor of arts degree. In 1980, Mr. Steyer served as an extern to California Supreme Court Justice Matthew O. Tobriner and earned his law degree from University of San Francisco the following year.
