In Memoriam (1964-2025)

Carlos Alvarez, one of the firm’s founding members and an esteemed litigator and friend of more than thirty years, passed away on December 24, 2025. His impact on our firm and the broader community is profound and his loss immeasurable.
Carlos was born on April 1, 1964 and grew up in East Los Angeles. Carlos married his college sweetheart from the University of San Francisco, his beloved wife, Anne, in 1990. They made their home in San Francisco, where they built a life filled with family, friendship, and community. Carlos was a loving father to his son, David, and daughter, Julia, devoted to his family and a committed community volunteer – among other things, Carlos coached youth sports, acted as a Scout leader, and served as a board member of Catholic Charities San Francisco, St. Brendan’s Parish Advisory Board and St. Francis Homes Association.
Carlos graduated from Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall) in 1989. He spent the majority of his 35-year career as an attorney with Steyer Lowenthal, where he will forever be remembered not only as a leader and mentor, but also as someone who made the practice of law fun. It would be difficult to find someone who has passed through the doors of our firm – client, colleague or counsel – who does not have a Carlos “story,” reflecting both his superior intellect, and his unending talent for hilarious antics, nicknames and catchphrases that reminded everyone to laugh. He is dearly missed by us all.
